Buckwheat Sowing, Cultivation and Harvest
Buckwheat is sown in the second half of May when the risk of frost has passed. Buckwheat does not grow well in poor soil but ash should be used instead of manure because it tends to lodge on manured soil. Up to three years old buckwheat seeds will grow but it is best to use seeds from the previous year.
Buckwheat germinates fast and requires favorable weather conditions for high yield. The weather should be dry and warm after sowing until the third leaf is developed, then moist, and dry again when flowering and ripening. Buckwheat ripens unevenly and must be harvested when most seeds are ripe.
